Sepsis Care in the Emergency Department

Sepsis is a condition resulting from the body’s response to severe infection, and is a growing health concern in Canada. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), more than 30,000 patients are hospitalized in Canada each year, because of sepsis, and 30% of these die from related complications. Although sepsis is a significant cause of morbidity, it has been reported that adequate initial therapy is initiated in less than 42% of cases. And while it can be difficult to detect, studies have identified various factors that can reduce deaths from Sepsis, in particular early recognition and treatment. Many hospitals have made reducing their sepsis mortality rates a priority; however it still remains an important challenge. By following simple, and early emergency department interventions, you can have a significant impact on the mortality of these patients.
